Updated Chapters using Xpand & Structure Free

Greetings,

I have re-written Chapters, 7, 8, 9, and 11 using Digidesign's Xpand and Sampletank. I have also rewritten the part of Chapter 11 showing the new way to download the Waves plug-ins using an iLok.

I also re-uploaded a new Version of UnderwaterGFS Pro Tools session to include a Pro Tools Session using Xpand and Structure.

I am no longer supporting Sampletank and encourage anyone doing the MIDI exercises to install Xpand! and Structure Free. You can get both plug-ins FREE at Digidesign.com.

Right now, these Chapters are in Microsoft Word format with attached screenshots. My publisher keeps promising PDF files, but has not delivered. In the meantime, you can download the new chapter updates HERE

Thanks for your patience everyone and sorry this took so long.

Gina

I am new to ProTools and am finding your book invaluable. I am having a problem, though, recording guitar. The green indicator is picking it up, but the track doesn't turn red or record waveforms. Is there a fix? Do I need to know midi?

I will appreciate your helping me to move forward with this.

Thanks.

Chan,

Are you sure you have the book? The beginning of the book teaches how to create an audio track and record audio. If you see level on your track and hit record, it should record the waveform....

Did you do the first 2 chapters?

thanks,

gina

Ok, it seems I don't know how to post a new comment, so I think I am replying to the previous. But, my question is new.
First, thank you for the simplified book and updated chapters. I did not realize there was so much to ProTools! You are awesome!
Ok, so, I have spent so many hours trying to research and find out why I keep getting the "running out of CPU usage", I looked/reviewed through the book, went online. I have a 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with 2G of RAM, using a Lacie 250G firewire Audio drive. The settings are on max in PT, per the recommended levels for mixing. And I am only using 1 EQ for each of my 5-6 tracks (chapter 5). I went to add GuitarRig 2, and suddenly my computer is "slow" aka got stupider? :P
Any help would be so much appreciated. I am able to wrap my brain around the ProTools lessons and music theory, but I am afraid CPU biology/anatomy is my struggling point.
PS. Great music, Gina!

Dennis,

You are so sweet - thank you so much -

Questions: Did you reformat the drive when you got it? How is it connected to the computer? Which PT interface are you using?

What operating system and what version of Pro Tools?

Let me know and we'll see if we can't figure this out...

No worries - al the best,

Gina

Good Morning and Thank you, Gina!
Yes, I formatted the drive per the ProTools instructions, Mac OS Extended (Jounaled), and is connected direct to the computer via firewire. I am using ProTools LE 7.4.2 with Leapard 10.5.5, and actually the audio drive is a 500G drive. I verified the disk and it says "ok".
Are the plugins supposed to be on the Audio Drive or the Hard Drive, I thought the Hard Drive.
I thank you so very much!
Dennis

oops, forgot to mention, using a Mbox Pro2 interface.

Gina,
I am sorry for troubling you, but apparently I am not the only one suffering from NI GR2's relationship with PT. I tried the Amplitube and no issues. Which is sad, since I like the GR2. Maybe I can figure out how to use my Boss GT-10 with PT. :)
One other question, when looping in Ch 5, I hear a "pop". Any ideas?
Again, my apologies for asking the previous question, and thank you again,
Dennis

Dennis,

It seems this is a Native instruments issue.

Read this: http://www.native-instruments.com/index.php?id=leopard&L=1#c68502

This page is about a month old but from what I read it says you should uninstall Guitar Rig, trash your preferences. If you need help, let me know.

Also Digi posts this lists of troubleshooting tips for running LE on a Mac:

http://duc.digidesign.com/showthread.php?t=54888

But, it sounds like it's a Guitar Rig thing which you figured out as well.

Keep me posted. I'm curious how it works out.

Regarding loops and hearing a pop, it means that the beginning sample of your loop is not right at the beginning of the waveform so it's starting after the waveform begins - what instrument is causing this pop if you solo tracks? Let me know and I'll tell you how to fix it.

I am travelling it NYC today and will be away from my computer most of the day, but I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Rock on.

Gina,
Thank you for all your help! Sincerely! I hope you had a great trip to NY!
I decided to hold off on getting GR2 to work, since I will be learning ProTools, boss GT-10, on top of writing music, practicing guitar, all after a day job that is non-music related, and being a single parent!
I was able to figure out S/PDIF i/o, and recorded a bit with my GT-10! Whew!
I am about to start Ch7!
Oh, by the way, I went back into the Session and looped it. And no pops. Go Figure.
I am loving this!
All the best,
Dennis

hi, i'm excited about your book after reading through reviews. I wonder if there will be a new edition that includes all those re-written chapters in the near future? I hope to buy the book soon, and it will be terrific if it has those. Thanks!

Hi, Gina. Love the book, but I'm having a problem importing the loops in Chapter 2, Exercise 2. I'm using a Mac Pro, Leopard(OSX 5.5) with an M-Audio Projectmix I/O and ProTools M-Powered. As soon as I get to the drop-down box labeled "Audio Import Options", I choose the "New track" and "Session start" as you suggest in the Peachpit site addenda in the bonus section to your book. However, I get an error message that says,
"Could not complete the Import Audio command because Assertion in "/Volumes/Development/vb_leopard_r2/AlturaPorts/NewFileLibs/CoreFoundation/MacBuild/../..Sys/MacOS/Sys_VolumeMacOS.cpp", line 896.
Of course, I can't complete the exercises in Chap. 2 because the loops won't load. BTW, I did download and install the Leopard patch from Digidesign (I run ver.7.4). Please help if you can.

Hello Gina,

I am on Chapter 11 of your book now. I have received your email updates for Chaps7-11. Question: When I go to download the Waves Musicians 2 bundle, I get a message that says it only works with Windows XP or 2000. I have Vista on my PC. Then it shuts down and gives me a phone number to call for obtaining different OS. I just want to make sure I'll be able to get it before shelling out money for iLok and waiting for it to arrive.

Gina Fant-Saez said...

John,

Sorry about the probs you're having.

You need to go to the Waves site (waves.com) and download the Waves V6 Essentials and from that download, install ONLY Musicians 2 bundle - unless you want demos of everything in there.

I am happy to help if I can. I'll try and replace that file on my website in the next day or two.

All the very best,

Gina

Hi Gina, I've bought the book!

As I was going through the MIDI chapters I'd emailed you to request for the chapters written using Xpand! and Structure Free about 2-3 weeks ago.

Meanwhile I was trying to follow the existing chapters with SampleTank 2 Free, but even after installing like what the book says, I couldn't get past pg 195 (2) as the Insert track does not show SampleTank 2 Free when selecting multi-channel plug-in > Instrument (as well as in any other sub menu). I used the SampleTank 2 Free zip from protools for Musician site as I couldn't get one from IK Multimedia anymore.

I have protools LE 7.4.2 with MBOX Mini.

I wonder if you could advise how I can proceed? Appreciate much !

Thanks much in advance !

Is there going to be a Pro Tools 8 version? If so, when do you think it'll come out?

Gina Fant-Saez said...

KS,

I'm working on getting a new publisher just for version 8.

Hang in there. I'm trying so hard to make this happen.

Gina,
How different do you anticipate the version 8 book to be from version 7.4? Just got PT 8 and figured enough to make multi-track recordings w/ automated mix; got some plug-ins to work etc. My question is should I wait for version 8 book or make do w/ PT 7 book? [I realize you want to sell books so you may just suggest getting the current version, but thought I'd ask anyways!]

Hello Gina,

I have tried all the steps you suggested to get rid of this "access violation occured" message (with Waves plugins), but it keeps popping up. I'm afraid as a last resort I'm going to have to reformat my hard drive and start over. Probably a good idea anyway.

Thanks, John S.

Gina Fant-Saez said...

John,

I would definitely not reformat your hard drive. Have you called Digi and Waves and goggled "access violation occurred" - have you trashed all preferences used the Digi Utility?

Here is the Digi Utility link: http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?langid=1&navid=54&itemid=25974

I would rarely ever reformat a drive for a problem like this....

My two cents...

Good luck!!

I have an older version of PT (6.1 - original mbox) can I use Xpand! or do I have to upgrade? Also, I downloaded the Underwater zip file, and I can't find a session (.pts) file...am I missing something?

Gina Fant-Saez said...

Tom,

When you unzip the file, what do you see inside the folder?

I don't think you'll be able to open the Underwater session with version 6 though- sorry.

yes for Xpand and Structure, you do need to upgrade - you really should... 6 is about 4 years old now....

Sorry for the bad news.

Yell if I can help with anything.

Warmest regards,

Gina

Gina

I guess I will have to talk to digidesign about the upgrade.

when I unzip the file, I get 3 folders: audio files, plug-in settings, and structure files, and 5 files:._UWSampletank.ptf, .UWXpand.ptf, UWSampletank.ptf, UWXpand.ptf, and WaveCache.

Have they changed the suffix to .ptf for version 7? instead of .pts for version 6?

Tom W

Gina Fant-Saez said...

Tom,

You can't open PT7 files in PT6 without saving them as PT6 files...

And PT6 did not support Audio Instruments so it wouldn't make sense for me to save them for you as PT 6 files...

Changing the suffix won't help.... So very sorry.

Time to upgrade.....

Gina

Gina

Well, I made the jump and sent for the 7.4 upgrade, which now comes with the 8.0 upgrade also, so when I get back home I will be fully up to speed.

As an aside, I got the original mbox when it was fairly new and have been trying off and on for several years to get a handle on pro tools but have been unable to do so until I got your book. Keep up the good work, it is easily the best thing I have seen for someone not previously familiar with recording systems.

Thanks in advance

HI, Gina. Saw you at ASCAP in NY last autumn, and figured that as knowledgeable and articulate as you are, Pro Tools for Musicians would be a good book to have. After your talk on eSessions, I went across the street and bought the book.

A few months later, and I'm discovering my hunch was correct. Great book! It took me a while to get over the temptation to just read without doing all the exercises, since I've had ProTools since last summer, but its clear to me now how valuable physically doing these things is.

Now, of course, to my problem.

I'm at the "Underwater" download for Xpand and Structure. I'm using PT 7.4.2, MAC OS 10.5.3 Macbook Pro, with a separate audio drive.

When I open the session, I get a window with a bunch of Structure Free file names at the bottom for Organ, etc., two folders above them labeled "Structure Factory Libraries" and "Structure QuickStart".

At the very top is a message stating: "Choose Root Directory for 80 missing audio files"

I have no idea what this means, or how to fix it. I do know that if I play your tune, although there is MIDI information in the Structure tracks, I'm not hearing anything from them. I am hearing the Xpand tracks.

Help!!

Hi Gina,

I wrote to you awhile back about "access violation occured" with Waves plugins. I am happy to report I finally found a solution. Right-click the desktop icon for ProTools, go into Properties, click the Compatibility tab, and then check "Run this program in compatability mode for Windows XP (Service pack 2)". I have Windows Vista. Thanks again for all your help.
