My Book and Pro Tools 8

Greetings all,

I get this question a lot and thought it would be easiest to post a topic here.

Pro Tools 8 works exactly the same as Pro Tools 7 so the book will work very well with Pro Tools 8. The biggest issue is the big change in the look of the software, so it won't look the same as the screenshots in my book. It will look very similar so it's really not that confusing. But, again, the basic operation is the same.

There are some really cool additions to the Pro Tools 8 such as new plug-ins and new Virtual Instruments. I believe that you will learn the basics in my book and then be able to use all these cool new toys.

So, yes, I would recommend my book even with Pro Tools 8.

I don't have immediate plans to write a Pro Tools 8 book. I thought I had a publisher lined up, but it just fell through.

I do hope to write a Pro Tools 8 book someday though...

I'm here to answer any questions you have.

Thanks all,

Gina

Hi Gina,

Please disregard my last message. My main problem now is trying to get the mono busses to show in Bus 1-16. (Only showing stereo). But I'm going to try to solve this on my own for awhile.

Up to page 348 the book is great. This is not about pt 8, but a comment about using the waves bundle. I downloaded it from your website. It was version 6, not version 5 as in the book. It requred a password (pc) which I didn't have. I uninstalled it, and it wiped out my protools ilok autorization - I had to reinstall it. Seems to me, the demo version of waves 6 is not useable.

Thanks for the update. I'm a musician who loves your first book, and hope you can land a deal for PT8 - I would definitely buy it. I would be interested in seeing video tutorials by you as well. I appreciate your clear approach, it's very practical and focused on getting the basic structure of Pro Tools down, and isn't cluttered by flashy tricks. There needs to be more of that out there.

Hi Gina, thank you so much for your wonderful book it is really making Pro Tools very accessible. Unfortunately, only 45 pages in I have run into quite a major snag. For some reason I am getting crackling, popping, static sounds coming out of my speakers during playback. I imported the drum loops in chapter 2 and have the click track. The shakers, hi-hats, and click don't elicit any extra sounds from the speakers, but the snare does and anything I add on as a new track makes the sound. I have no idea how to trouble shoot this problem. My speakers have no problems when used at any other time. Maybe there is a setting that needs adjusting? Could you please give me some suggestions?

Thanks you so much,

---Elisa.

Bernard,

I posted updates to these chapters here. They include installation instructions for V6.

Download those and all should be fine.

Thanks and sorry for the long delay.

regarding popping and static - I'm hoping you're under warranty and can contact Digidesign - it sounds like a hardware issue. If you Google "pop clicks Pro Tools LE" - you get lots of people with the same problem who have resolved it.

Sorry I'm not more help. Best of luck.

Hi Gina, thanks for your response to my question regarding popping and static. You actually led me to the solution by stating you thought it was a hardware problem. It made me think.

Silly me, in the time since I have had my mobile pre usb, there have been those ever so exciting updates for Windows XP (service pack 2 & 3).

Yep, that's right, I hadn't updated my audio interface's drivers to accommodate these changes. There was a new update that came out March this year. I went to the digidesign website, downloaded, and voila, everything works again as it should. No popping, no static.

Now, I can continue my extraordinary journey through the Pro Tools world with your lovely book guiding me. All the work that you are doing to help others is so wonderful and very appreciated. Thank you.

Best regards,

Elisa.

Hi Gina,

I wanted to thank you so much for your book. I consider myself a fairly smart person and yet of the "many" How-To Pro tools books I bought and read, yours was the only one that taught me how to "use" the program.
I am a singer/songwriter and was lucky enough to purchase a computer jam-packed with expensive Pro Tools plug-ins from a record producer for a bargain. Unfortunately, not having a basic understanding of Pro Tools made the entire purchase moot. Your book was filled with many "Eureka!" moments for me and I'm finally confident working with the program.
In fact, a big pay off moment for me, (after many hours of practice), was when the Mastering Engineer, who is working on my tracks, complimented me on my mixing skills!!! That rocks!

Also, now that I'm working with a studio, I can fix most of my issues from home. I'm now easily able to go back into a session, remix a single element, (like just the vocals, or guitar), bounce the track, and send it back online to be re-added to the Master track.

I had no clue before you..
Thanks!!

Gina - This is long overdue but I too want to thank you for your book. I was a complete novice, and an unabashed fraidycat when it came to recording. Your book helped me accomplish my dream - the making of my first CD. I even thanked you in the liner notes!

Again, thanks for an amazingly well-written, easy-to-follow reference. Off to record CD number 2!

Hello, I really enjoy the book, however I am stuck on Chapter 9 (Midi) after installing SampleTank I am attempting to download the 73 EPiano from the website and I get prompted for FTP Username/password. Is there an alternative place I can get the sounds to complete the chapter? Thanks

Gina Fant-Saez said...

Hey Bryan,

Read the post below this one - I created updated chapters and am now using Xpand and Structure Free.

Sampletank is WAY old since i wrote the book in 2007.

Yell if you need help.

All the best,

Gina

Hi Gina!

I'm a newbie to Pro Tools 8LE. I've bought several books on Pro Tools and they all have such a left-brained approach, that it was lost on me. Your book feels like it was written just for me and all the right-brainers out there! ;)

I do hope you'll be coming out with a Pro Tools 9 book (since it is the latest at this point,) - yours is the only book I've found so far that approaches Pro Tools the way songwriters think.

Even though I'm a bit late to the party, I am sooo happy I found you and your book! I'll be following your blog as well.

Thanks sooo much, Gina!
